Retro Diva has come a long way since early 2017. Sue has created so many beautiful garments it’s hard to choose a favourite!
I went through a little phase of sketching earlier in the year and Sue (Retro Diva) asked me to sketch out a couple of ideas. So, of course, I went a little crazy and sketched out about a decade worth of outfits. One, in particular, I was especially proud of – The Autumn Cape!
I’d been lusting after a cape for so long but never found the right style, the ones on the high street were far too modern-looking or not very well made. So finally I had some control over those factors.
Before pencil hit paper I went to Pinterest for some ideas. I looked at 50’s Vogue patterns, got inspired by vintage Dior and old Hollywood film stills. I wanted to create something dramatic but subtle enough for everyday wear. So many ideas were swirling through my mind, I finally made the first mark on the paper.
Fast forward to a month or so later – Sue and I were looking for the perfect fabric for the cape and for a matching outfit. We knew it had to be plaid, so we spent upwards of an hour trying to find ‘the one’. Once we found it, it was time for Sue to do her magic.
Sue never fails to impress me with her speed and quality of work. She constantly kept in touch with ideas, lengths, pockets… I was over the moon when she came over the night before the photoshoot with the cape of my dreams! She also made a beautiful pencil skirt and a gorgeous blouse to accompany it.
We headed out to a village in the Peak District called Ilam (one of my favourite places) to have a Retro Diva photoshoot. No doubt, by now you will have been bombarded with the images on my Instagram. I’m just so proud of the team – Chris Baugh photography and Bob Atkinson Photography worked so hard to make every shot incredible.
Now, let me tell you about the cape itself. The outside is made of a woolen blend that feels so luxuriously soft and lined with a stunning crimson satin. The cape is stitched onto a jacket. It’s perfect for autumn and winter- it keeps the warm in. Oh, and did I mention… It’s got pockets!! Even the pockets are lined with red satin. The neckline sits high to keep you warm all over and the belt nips you in at the waist so you can still show off your curves.
