My very first experience with a mobile hairdresser! I didn’t know what to expect, but Sarah from The Colour Drive, pulled out all the stops! She was so much fun and the hours flew by.

I wanted to share my first colour appointment with you in this blog to let you know how it went, from start to finish and even aftercare. (Also a sneak peek at my new hair from my second appointment!)

About Sarah:

Sarah runs The Colour Drive specialising in vivid colours, she has a wealth of knowledge from her 30 years of hairdressing experience, but she also loves expanding her knowledge every time the opportunity comes up by enrolling on courses, so she always has the most up to date information and tools. All of this incredible knowledge means she always leaves her clients with the mane of their dreams!

My first appointment started way before she even got to my door. A few days prior to our appointment she dropped off a very important box containing a test patch kit with detailed instructions on how to do it. After having no reaction to the test patch she got back in touch to confirm the ‘go ahead’.

So the day came, I hadn’t had my hair done for a couple of months so it was in need of some TLC. Sarah arrived with all of her equipment including a floor cover (I know it doesn’t sound like much, but when you have light floors and inky blue hair – you do the math) it immediately told me that I was in safe hands, she’d literally thought of everything including the floor!

Sarah brought all the traditional tools of the trade along with a portable hair washing station, mirror and cape as well as biodegradable towels. I loved the fact that if Sarah knew she was only going to use something once she would make sure it was biodegradable. Gloves – Yep, Towels – yep, packaging – also yep! I’m very conscious of plastic waste so this was another very lovely touch.

She blended a Neal & Wolf bleach to lighten my roots, now forget the whole ‘running around the room trying to stop the stinging’ routine, the bleach Sarah used was really comfortable with no stinging or burning. After the bleach she applied a toner so the blue would blend beautifully from root to tip. Before my appointment Sarah lovingly mixed my own custom blend of blue using a mix of Paint Bang’s Pluto and *clears throat* Uranus, giving a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘galaxy hair’. So, after a relaxing rinse in the portable hair wash station it was dye time!

The dye smelt gorgeous, but not overpowering (big win) felt very moisturising and didn’t require too much developing time to achieve a strong vivid colour. Whilst it developed, Sarah organised herself for the next stage in the process. She cleaned up the bleach and dye tubs and put them away then got everything ready for the cut and style. After a quick cup of tea and a natter it was time to wash the dye out.

A pro-tip I’ve heard time and time again is to wash your hair with cold water to maintain the colour and keep it healthy, whilst I try my best to do this I really do love my creature comfort’s, Sarah was here to change that! Big breath in and get ready for the cold! It wasn’t as bad as I thought and after my appointment I’ve been lowering the temperature of my showers and it really does prolong the life of your colour.

After my cut and blow-dry Sarah styled my hair with brush out curls in a loose pageboy style.

Once Sarah had packed away and we said goodbye, she messaged me later that night with aftercare advice, another really great touch!

She also offers a vivid top-up service. This means she will blend a batch of your colour for you so that you can do a colour top up in-between appointments at home, this especially comes in handy when your photoshoot calendar is all over the place, I can be freshly blue for every booking. I also made a video about my vivid top up experience.

✨ And, as promised, a look at my brand new hair! Using Directions Hair Dye✨

Overall, I’d 100% recommend Sarah! I’ve loved every step of the process. You can tell she’s passionate about what she does by the level of service she provides and the amount of really helpful information she shares on her instagram page. Go check her out – now!
